Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Deep brick red, in bright condition. The wine doesn't hesitate in showing the lifted scents of mulberry, blueberry, dark jubes, menthol and cedar that are its hallmark. It is no shrinking violet and displays background notes of leather and earth. Palate: Here the impression is of plump, soft dark fruit flavors – blackcurrant, dark jubes and mulberry. Full bodied with smooth texture and a well-balanced tannin structure.

Deep garnet-purple in color and a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot, the 2011 Amy’s shows off aromas of warm cassis, dark chocolate, blackberry compote and blueberries with hints of bay leaves and fertile earth. Full-bodied, richly fruited and packed with black and blue fruit flavors, it has a medium level of fine-grained tannins and well balanced, refreshing acid before finishing with great persistence. Drink it now to 2018+.

Moss Wood, Australia
Moss Wood Winery Video

Moss Wood was established as a specialist, high-quality winery. This was its raison d’être and still provides the motivation for its continued existence. The proprietors of Moss Wood, Clare and Keith Mugford, have been making wine and tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since 1984 and 1979, respectively. It is their belief that all decisions made in the vineyard, or at the winery, are based on the effect they will have on the quality of the wine. As a new wine producing area, Margaret River has a short viticultural history, therefore winemakers need to be continually reassessing their soil management practices and the performance of their vines if they are to understand the viticulture of the region and obtain the best results in the vineyard. The Moss Wood and Mugford names are synonymous with uncompromising quality.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
