Montirius Le Clos 2007
Rhone Red Blends from Vacqueyras, Rhone, France
Its color is dark ruby. The nose is very expressive of fruits and spices. The mouth is powerful, the tannins silky. The whole is in harmony, with freshness, volume and body. It has a very beautiful keeping potential. To accompany truffle-omelet, lamb in curry, subtle salty, spicy and baked combinations.
The Wine Advocate - "A blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah, the 2007 Vacqueyras Le Clos was brought up in cement tanks. It exhibits gorgeous notes of kirsch liqueur, licorice, and smoked herbs, a full-bodied, fleshy mouthfeel, pure fruit, sweet tannin, and a long finish. Range: 90-93"
International Wine Cellar - "Deep red with a bright rim. Vibrant aromas of red and dark berries complemented by zesty minerals, garrigue and smoky bacon fat. Midweight raspberry and bitter cherry flavors are firmed by tangy minerals and given depth by a candied licorice quality. Manages to be rich and energetic at the same time, finishing with excellent cut and length. This is a 50/50 blend of grenache and syrah. Range: 92-93"
Eric and Christine Saurel began bottling wine under the Montirius label with the 1996 vintage (the name is a contraction of their childrens’ names: Manon, Justine, and Marius). Eric is the fifth generation to assume the mantle of vigneron in the Saurel family. His grandfather was instrumental in the development of the Vacqueyras co-op after WWI and the Saurels remained important members until 2002, when Eric and Christine pulled out.
The Montirius vineyards have been organic since 1990 and certified biodynamic since 1999. The Saurels make the following wines with a decided emphasis on purity--they are made entirely in large cement vats without any wood influences. View all Montirius Wines
About VacqueyrasView a map of Vacqueyras wineries (vah-keh-rahs) Once just a Cotes-du-Rhone village, the wine of Vacqueyras made its mark and in 1990, gaining its own appellation. The wine is somewhat similar to its northern neighbor, Gigondas, and occasionally even more rustic. Vacqueyras wine gives off the flavors of the earth where the vines grow - wild herbs, spice and rocky soil.
Notable FactsLike other Southern Rhone wine, Grenache is the main player here, and a minimum of 50% of the varietal is required, allowing the blend more room for varietals like Syrah and Mourvedre. Often found for good value prices, these wines are perfect for hearty meat stews and herb-based dishes.
About France - Other regionsWhen it comes to wine, France is a classic. Classic blends, grapes and styles began in the country and they still remain. Think about it - people ask for a Burgundian style Pinot Noir, they refer to wines as Bordeaux or Rhone blends - Champagne even had to pass a law to stop international wineries from putting their region on the label of all sparkling wine.
