    Winemaker Notes

Made from grapes grown in some of California's finest cool-climate vineyards, Montevina Chardonnay is a golden-hued wine with seductive aromas of tart apples and figs. Bright with crisp flavors of tropical fruit and ripe pear layered with subtle hints of vanilla bean and toasted almonds for added dimension. Bright acidity balances the richer flavors and makes our Chardonnay especially food-friendly.

Some say you can taste the history of a place in a glass of wine. Perhaps that’s why the wines of Montevina are brimming with such intense flavors and bold character. Spanish for “mountain vine,” Montevina brings a different altitude—and attitude—to its winemaking. Established in 1970 in the foothills of California’s rugged Sierra Nevada, historic Montevina was the region’s first post-Prohibition winery, resurrecting Amador County’s legendary wine industry. Since then, we’ve been known for crafting deeply flavored, robust wines that capture the unique character of this remarkable region. Our state-of-the art winery is spectacular, and features a spacious, friendly tasting room and a beautiful vineyard-ringed patio where you can relax with a glass of wine. There’s nothing quite like escaping to Amador wine country, at Montevina.

California’s most praised white wine, Chardonnay is also the state’s most planted white grape variety. Diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles.

Chardonnay planted in the cooler, coastal zones takes on bright characteristics like lemon zest, key lime, green apple and wet flint. For this style, look to the chilly Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley.

The inland zones of California’s coast, such as the Russian River, Sonoma, Napa and Livermore Valleys maintain a more Goldilocks-esque climate where both styles go. Early picking retains acidity and creates a leaner style but leaving the grapes to hang creates an approachable Chardonnay, balancing richness and finesse.

Chardonnay also plays a major part in the sparkling wine production of the Anderson Valley and Carneros.
