Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Intense purplish-red in color. Abundant blue and red berries on the nose with a predominance of blackberries, blueberries, and cherries as well as a characteristic note of dry-cured Serrano ham along with French oak, which also lends aromas of vanilla and a touch of chocolate. Vibrant and round on the palate with very soft, well-balanced tannins that complement this impeccable Syrah from Colchagua.

This wine pairs well with red meats, stir-fried beef, pork chops, spaghetti with Bolognese sauce, and lamb chops.

Blend: 90% Syrah, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Viognier

Amazing aromas of tea leaf, blueberry, flint and light spice. Full body, fresh and very clean, yet finishes delicate and crisp. Complex flavors of hazelnut, chocolate and meat.
  • 92
A lithe, rich and concentrated red, with dark plum, currant and bramble flavors flanked by Asian spice and mocha notes. Dark chocolate details fill the creamy and sumptuous finish. Drink now through 2020.
  • 90
This is opaque in color, with oaky, balsamic aromas of black fruits, mint and vanilla. In the mouth, this is muscular, with full and somewhat rough tannins. Toasty roasted blackberry flavors are peppery, minty and fully spiced, while on the finish this is packing all sorts of power and oak. Drink through 2021.

Montes, South America
Montes Winery Video

With the release of the first Montes Alpha wine back in 1988, Montes became one of the first premium wineries of Chile. Their premise, a clear belief that Chile had an untapped potential as a producer of quality wines, made them a benchmark for other wineries to follow. Its original four partners' total involvement and the continuous help of the angels that decorate their labels was key to their success. Two decades later, Montes is the fifth most important winery of Chile where Aurelio Montes continues leading the winemaking area with the same passion as the first day. Hard work and total focus on quality has led Montes to be one of the most successful and respected quality-driven wineries in Chile as they continue pioneering and breaking new grounds in wine.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Colchagua Valley Wine

Rapel Valley, Chile

View all products

Well-regarded for intense and exceptionally high quality red wines, the Colchagua Valley is situated in the southern part of Chile’s Rapel Valley, with many of the best vineyards lying in the foothills of the Coastal Range.

Heavy French investment and cutting-edge technology in both the vineyard and the winery has been a boon to the local viticultural industry, which already laid claim to ancient vines and a textbook Mediterranean climate.

The warm, dry growing season in the Colchagua Valley favors robust reds made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec and Syrah—in fact, some of Chile’s very best are made here. A small amount of good white wine is produced from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
