Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Lots of berry fruits with chocolate, tobacco and vanilla, Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon has richness, depth and structure.

It shows great complexity on the mouth, showing a full bodied and balanced mid palate, with classical Cabernet notes and soft but firm tannins with a lasting persistence and a remarkable finish.

Although a superb wine as it is, it may also be considered as a great wine for cellaring.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2009 Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon contains 10% Merlot and was sourced entirely from the estate’s Apalta vineyards. It was aged for 12 months in French oak. It reveals a reticent nose which with coaxing displays notions of toast, spice box, violets, black currant, and blackberry. In the glass it has ample fruit, tasty flavors, and decent balance but lacks the breadth and volume for an outstanding rate. Even so, there is much to like in this wine which should be consumed over the next 4-5 years."
89 Points

"Earthy, warm and generously oaked, with berry aromas that bring leather and smoke. The palate is healthy and tight, with spiky tannins and herbal black fruit flavors. Grippy on the finish, with olive and spice. Very much a good-quality, typically styled Chilean Cabernet."

Learn About Montes Map ItMap It

With the release of the first Montes Alpha wine back in 1988, Montes became one of the first premium wineries of Chile. Their premise, a clear belief that Chile had an untapped potential as a producer of quality wines, made them a benchmark for other wineries to follow. Its original four partners' total involvement and the continuous help of the angels that decorate their labels...

Learn About Chile

(CHEE-lay) Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
