Michael David Winery Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Cabernet Sauvignon from California
The fruit for this brute of a Cab comes from the original "super freak," Michael Phillips vineyard located only a medicine balls toss away from the winery. Surprisingly nimble and elegant, showing great balance, strength, and poise. This Cabernet has a bouquet of ripe fruit and roasted spices. Full bodied, balanced, and mouth filling with gobs of black currant, charred oak, vanilla and cassis. Mild tannins with a mellow finish.
Tasting Panel - "Like t he strong man at the circus whom some call a brute, those who take the effort experience him to be powerful and elegant at the same time. Think of the confident high-wire climber when you think of the balance and pose in position (high acidity) and a long finish ahead. Soy, caramel, pepper and roasted spices fill in the spaces, a crowd of ripe plum and black currant cheering on the show. "
Michael David Winery
Michael and David Phillips represent the fifth generation of growers in Lodi, and things are changing. With 500 acres of premium wine grapes, there is plenty of room for experimentation and innovation.
The vineyards are irrigated by the Mokelumne River, which carries crystal-clear water from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, depositing minerals into the rich soils upon which the grapes thrive. Though not certified organic, Michael~David Winery strives to use all natural methods including integrated pest management, beneficial insects for pest control, trellising, leaf pulling and natural mined sulfur for mildew control. We are six generations of winegrowers specializing in hand-crafted Rhone varietals as well as Lodi's famous Old Vine Zinfandels. View all Michael David Winery Wines
About Other CaliforniaView a map of Other California wineries
California has nearly 100 American Viticulture Areas (AVAs) and accounts for almost 90% of wine production in the United States. In our section of Other California, we include wines from smaller AVAs as well as wines from the California AVA. Here are a few smaller AVAs you may see on the label:
Livermore Valley AVA, located right outside of San Francisco and home to wineries such as Wente.
Lodi County AVA, an AVA further east of San Francisco and known for its excellent, old-vine Zinfandels.
San Francisco Bay AVA, a sprawling AVA that covers Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties, to name a few. Wine that holds only the California AVA is typically a wine that includes grapes from a number of different AVAs, which leads to the general labeling of the wine as California. This does not denote the quality of the wine, only the diversity of where the grapes originate.
About CaliforniaIt's not rare to see a wine's country of origin listed as "California." A country into itself in the wine world, California makes enough varieties and styles to match many European wine countries. It produces a diverse range of wines that span the quality spectrum.
The most famous of the California wine regions is Napa Valley, and these wines are certainly outstanding – but it's not as broad and diverse as its larger neighbor, Sonoma County. Down south, Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley is well-known for its Rhône blends, as well as cool-climate varieties like Pinot and Chardonnay. The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.

6 ratings, 5 with reviewswinegirl2003 - Fairfax, VA51/1/2014This wine was part of a Christmas gift from my brother. I opened the bottle tonight 1/1/14 and polished it off with my husband within 2 hrs. I'm now placing an order for more and find out it's sold out - I'm a full bodied red person, be it shiraz, zin, cab, malbec. This was an outstanding vintage. First time I've tasted anything from this winery. Excellent in every aspect of a real full bodied and long on the finish. I'm going back to pour the last drop from the bottle for me - forget my husband - and will contact this winery to see if they will be shipping more to wine.com or if I can purchase on my own - it was that GOOD!!! All I can say is WOW for $20 and a 92 rating!!!!!!!!C J - Dillon, SC34/11/2014

lived up to previous reviews and the description!! great!!Kendah72 - Shelbyville, TN312/7/2013I so wanted to love this wine....but kind of like would be more appropriate. I am a big red lover, and hoped this wine would be big and yet flavorful. Unfortunately I found the tannins to be harsh, bringing to mind a wine of one-third the price. Drinkable, but nothing spectacular.Cincinnati wine guy - Loveland, OH511/27/2013
