    Winemaker Notes

This wine opens up with beautiful and powerful aromatics. The first sip follows through on the bold promises made by the aroma, by offering a lush mouthfeel and mouthwatering acidity. Filled with red fruits, this Cabernet Sauvignon offers ripe cherry, strawberry, and a touch of cranberry flavors. A tiny percentage of Malbec and Petit Verdot provide the accent notes to the solid Cabernet core, while the Merlot lends additional structure. There is a sweetness, like that from a black plum confit, that combines with toasty caramel and cedar box from barrel aging. The subtle oak component reflects the wine's balance and bold structure with nicely managed tannins. The long finish has no harsh edges and reminds us why we love our Alexander Valley mountain-grown fruit.

Medlock Ames is an estate fine wine producer located in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California. Started in 1998 by friends Chris James and Ames Morison, their commitment to quality through mindful and organic farming is considered to be one of their greatest assets. Their vineyards are farmed organically with no insecticides, chemical fertilizers or herbicides and solar power provides the energy needed to run. Only 55 of 338 acres are farmed, they chose to leave the majority of land in a natural state - reserving the majority of the acreage for oaks and wildflowers, not vines. Innovative and traditional methods are used to farm this boutique vineyard where vegetables, olives and wildlife also flourish. The portfolio includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Reserve Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Red Bordeaux Blend, estate bottled olive oil, verjus and preserves.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
