This wine captures the spirit of Napa Valley mountain Cabernet Sauvignon—rugged tannins, aromatic complexity, and pure varietal expression. Over time, these wines continue to round, and to unveil new layers of interest and complexity. With a light decanting the future is visible in tasting this wine.
Big & Bold
Top flight cork! Dark purple-red without any sign of oxidation. Full bodied, legs form slowly but become numerous and are strongly colored suggesting an abundance of fruity glycerol (and other "polyols). The nose is medium sized and suggests to me: dried fruit, dark berries, softwood. peonies. It is complex and will become more so with age. With an hour of air I found faint notes suggesting cassis and tobacco. The flavors are big and mouth filling but still young. The is good fruit but tannins are still astringent and the acid a bit too noticeable.. With time this will become something very interesting. I'd say this will mature in the 2020 to 2025 timeframe. The alcohol is a bit too present on the palate. There are comparably fine cabs at lower prices but Mayacamas has a long romance with many of us. If price is an issue then youn can do as well for less but otherwise, if you can wait several years this will reward your patience.
