Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep ruby red with reflections from crimson to garnet. Light vanilla aromas are accompanied by spices and tobacco leaf flavors. The palate is pervasive and leisurely with good length. Intriguing richness of flavor.

Pair with game, grilled red meats and mature cheeses. Also, pair with dark chocolate when more mature.

Critical Acclaim

"Love the aromas of cedar, light vanilla, dark berry and plums. Full body, with layered tannins and and a beautiful mouth-feel. Lingers for minutes. The is a subtle and complex. Mastrojanni is getting better and better. Better than 2006."
95 Points

"The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is a big wine loaded with personality. Sweet dark cherries, licorice, smoke and leather burst from the glass in this explosive, rich Brunello. Layers of flavor develop with air, filling out the wine’s broad-shouldered frame very nicely. Firm tannins support the generous finish. This is a fabulous showing from Mastrojanni. The Brunello was fermented in cement and aged cask for 36 months. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027."
93 Points

"Here's a dark, austere expression of Brunello, with layers of exotic spice, toasted nut, cardamom and forest underbrush. Small berry fruit comes through as raspberry and black currant. In the mouth, the wine is bright, defined and firm, showing solid tannic structure."
92 Points

"Bright medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, spices and dried flowers complicated by licorice and menthol. Smooth and plush in the middle, but with very good verve and definition to the intense red berry and licorice flavors. Concentrated, nicely balanced Brunello with smooth tannins, classic dryness and very good finishing lift and length."
91 Points

"Cherry and plum fruit is locked up within the firm, slightly hard-edged structure in this red, causing the wine to come off as angular and austere. But there's a core of sweet fruit and a long finish."

Tuscany is also home to the indigenous Italian grape variety, Sangiovese. Most of the wine coming from Tuscany is made from some clone of this...

Learn About Sangiovese

Sangiovese (SAHN-gee-oh-VAY-zee) Blood of Jove (literally translated) The principal grape of Chianti - in fact, the principle grape of all of Tuscany - has had its ups and downs. For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
