    Winemaker Notes

With Modello delle Venezie Masi has created a new innovative wine which however keeps a close relationship with Masi's roots in the hills of Verona. Masi has created a new model for the Venetian enology. It is a wine with an unusual grape mix: Corvina and Raboso Veronese, two of the most characteristic varieties in the Veneto. The typical characteristics of the Corvina grape provide color, bouquet and flavour of cherries; the Raboso Veronese contributes tannins, richness and vitality. The wine has a deep tone of ruby red, is round, well-structured, with the unmistakable bitter cherry flavour. Complex and elegant, Modello literalily means: "A perfect original example, a prototype for a more ample production". The Latin root of Modello is "modus", the same root for the Italian word for style (moda). Modello, a word that expresses the philosophy of production of this wine, more than any other reference to geographic names, names of grapes or of phantasy.

Masi's production strategy aims to emphasize the personality of each single product, while maintaining a recognizable Venetian style. In 1958, Masi was in the forefront of the work to identify the historic "cru" vineyard sites for Amarone. In 1964, Campofiorin was the first in a new category of wines, reinventing the technique of double fermentation and continually updating it. Masi has also updated the style of Amarone, using new appassimento and vinification technologies.

Masi wines are modern, attractive, well-balanced and easily identifiable; characteristics which have earned Masi recognition for having "revolutionized the art of wine-making in the Venetian region." Hugh Johnson defines Masi as "a touchstone for Veronese wines."
