Winemaker's Notes

Medium-deep garnet. A nose of deep, sweet dark cherry and spices. Very complex, lifted and alive;three-dimensional. Seemingly Burgundian in orientation. Medium-bodied, with an integrated, graceful attack of sweet fruit, smoke, leather and mineral. The wine still has considerable (well-integrated) sweet tannins still showing sufficient concentration remain on this plateau for a few years; long and elegant.

This wine is from my birth year. I had to buy it and taste it. It was such a great experience. Aromas of plum, maybe some faint fig. Something nuttty, some mushroom, and truffles. Also faint aromas of hay, green pepper, and leather. Yes, I know; a strange combination of aromas. But it was THAT complex. The fruit flavors are still there despite the age. A little bit of young, tart cherry. The aftertaste is fantastic; it is nutty and a bit earthy. I also taste mushrooms, nutmeg, very light oak and creamy vanilla, plus some notes of floral. I love that earthy, nutty, truffle flavors that linger.

I'm not sure how much longer this would have kept but it was lovely. It's amazing what 40 years in the bottle can do. It opened up to a still slightly fruity, very complex wine as described in the notes.
