Floral violet and rich caramel toast aromas give this heady wine a decidedly feminine air, additionally showing the beauty of the terroir where it is grown with layers of cassis, anise and blackberry jam flavors. The lush tannins are the result of the extended maceration, allowing the gritty texture to soften gracefully over a period of several weeks following primary fermentation. Texturally balanced, there is brightness to the juicy fruit that is well-integrated with vanilla, caramel and toast oak highlights.
The 2006 vintage of this Calistoga Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is dedicated to the 2008 Markham "Mark of Distinction" grant recipient for their passion and commitment to revitalizing the Bartlett Arboretum in Belle Plaine, Kansas. The Bartlett Arboretum, a 15-acre habitat for trees, was in need of revitalization due to flood damage. The Markham grant empowered steward, Robin Macy, to develop a detailed flood alleviation plan for the Euphrates Creek, with hopes of lessening flood damage for local homeowners and fortifying the near century-old Bartlett Arboretum for the future.

In 1972, Bruce Markham arrived in Napa Valley with the dream of starting a winery. Intent on crafting world-class wines for years to come, he purchased the "little jewels" that are still the Markham vineyards today. He was a pioneer in what is now the very heart of Napa, buying premium vineyard land before many understood the tremendous potential the valley offered for producing fine wines. He also purchased a winery. Originally established by Jean Laurent, the Markham winery dates back to 1879. Today, Markham Vineyards owns 350 acres of vineyards strategically located in several of Napa Valley's best growing regions. It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard lands were scooped up and vines were planted throughout the county. A number of wineries emerged, from large conglomerates to small boutiques to cult classics. Cabernet Sauvignon is definitely the grape of choice here, with many winemakers also focusing on Bordeaux Blends. Whites are usually Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Notable FactsWithin the Napa Valley lie smaller sub-AVAs that lend even more character specifics to the wines. Furthest south is Carneros, followed by Yountville, Oakville & Rutherford. Above those two is St.-Helena and finally, just granted an AVA, Calistoga. These areas are situated on the valley floor and are known for creating rich, smooth Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. There are a few mountain regions as well, nestled on the slopes overlooking the valley AVAs. Those include Howell Mountain, Stags Leap and Mount Veeder. Wines from the mountain regions are often more structured and firm, benefiting from more time in the bottle to evolve and soften.

Not only is Markham Vineyards’ first of two single-vineyard, limited production – only 300 cases of it and its sister wine, The Philanthropist, produced – estate grown cabernet sauvignon wines. It’s also part of Markham’s “Mark of Distinction” program. The winery is giving $25,000 grants to the Bartlett Arboretum, a tree habitat, in Bell Plaine, Kansas with proceeds from the ’06 vintage of The Altruist and. Drinking for a good cause makes me feel all warm and cuddly inside. Here’s another thing special about it. Look: A shimmering glass of purple pirate booty, translucent and bright ruby edge Smell: Markham made a fruit pie in the woods; dusty, lush, floral, black cherry, cedar and pepper scents burst from the glass. Taste: The Altruist Full is a giver, full of currant, plum, black cherry, jammy blackberries and chocolate with a long finish punctuated by mild oaky tannins.
