Winemaker's Notes

The distinctive 2005 Maquis Lien is made from a finely tuned blend of 38% Syrah, 32% Carmenere, 15% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, and 7% Malbec. It is a generous red wine that reflects the character of the Hurtado family's special plot of land.

In Chile's native Mapuche language, lien means "silver metal"—a reference to colonial Spanish coins that were once melted to make fine jewelry, like the lizard on the Maquis label.

Critical Acclaim

"Seductively perfumed aromas of black raspberry and smoky Indian spices, with floral and mineral accents adding complexity. Juicy, gently sweet red berry flavors pack good punch but are fat-free and show no rough edges. Clean and focused on the finish, with the red fruit qualities repeating. Boasts excellent clarity and energy."
90 Points

"This blend of Syrah, Carmenère, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot comes in at a higher level than many. Dark chocolate, almond candy and black fruit work the nose, while the palate is sizable and full of plum and dark berry flavors. Both the oak and acidity are up there, so expect power and a few loose edges as it seeks its sweet spot. "
89 Points

"This is focused, with a slightly dusty edge to the cedar, shaved vanilla, coffee and plum sauce flavors. The sinewy, minerally finish has nice grip. Syrah, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Drink now through 2009. 5,000 cases made."

They built a gorgeous, state-of-the-art gravity flow winery and set out to make a Super Chilean blend using the vineyard's best red grapes. Located in Valle de...

Learn About Chile

(CHEE-lay) Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

There are a multitude of grape varieties throughout the world, however, in a Darwinian sense, survival of the fittest only brings us wines made from grapes that can adapt to changing climates and winemaking techniques. Notable Facts Our other red wines primarily consists of...
