Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Named after a crossroad (crosara in the local dialect) that separates the two vineyards from which the Merlot grapes are sourced, Crosara is another successful result of Fausto Maculan's talent for crafting unmistakably Italian reds from Bordeaux's varietals. Extremely rich and deep purple in color, Crosara offers intense aromas of spice, coffee, chocolate and ripe black and red berries. In the mouth, the supple taste of ripe berries is followed by chewy, sweet and well-balanced tannins framing a juicy and lingering finish. An austere and elegant wine, recommended with rich pasta dishes, barbecued meats, game, and medium-aged cheese.

The 2004 Crosara blossoms on the palate with layers of ripe, dark fruit. Deceptively medium in body, this beautifully balanced Crosara shows remarkable harmony and finesse. Sweet notes of menthol and licorice linger on the finish. The 2004 remains surprisingly primary at this stage. Further bottle age will only help all the elements meld even more than they are at present. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Dark in color, offering ripe black cherry and a mélange of fresh herbs and flowers, with black olive and a hint of black licorice. Full-bodied and rich, with a concentrated core of fruit and chocolate and coffee notes. Has a long, fruity finish. Very tempting now. Best after 2009.

Maculan, Italy
Maculan Winery Image
For three generations the Maculan family has been selecting and vinifying the best grapes in Breganze, an enchanting village set like a small jewel at the foot of the Alps in Italy’s Veneto region. The surrounding mountains protect the area from cold winds, creating a perfect microclimate for the cultivation of vineyards. But it is Fausto Maculan’s drive and commitment, rather than any accident of nature, which set these wines apart and distinguish Maculan as an innovative and dynamic winery. Designed by Fausto himself, the winery is one of the most stunning small wineries in Italy, an amazing mixture of ingenuity and style. The new winery provides the theatre for a marvelous combination of antique traditions and modern techniques using the latest winemaking technology. Long-held family traditions are respected: from using specially selected vineyards and the careful selection of the bunches of grapes, to aging in new, small oak barrels and conserving the grapes on racks for the production of Torcolato. The fusion of tradition and innovation results in a selection of fresh and fruity whites, well-structured reds and delicious dessert wines. With generous fruit and supple tannins, Merlot is made in a range of styles from everyday-drinking to world-renowned and age-worthy. Merlot is the dominant variety in the wines from Bordeaux’s Right Bank regions of St. Emilion and Pomerol, where it is often blended with Cabernet Franc to spectacular result. Merlot also frequently shines on its own, particularly in California’s Napa Valley. Somm Secret—As much as Miles derided the variety in the 2004 film, Sideways, his prized 1961 Château Cheval Blanc is actually a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Producing every style of wine and with great success, the Veneto is one of the most multi-faceted wine regions of Italy.

Veneto's appellation called Valpolicella (meaning “valley of cellars” in Italian) is a series of north to south valleys and is the source of the region’s best red wine with the same name. Valpolicella—the wine—is juicy, spicy, tart and packed full of red cherry flavors. Corvina makes up the backbone of the blend with Rondinella, Molinara, Croatina and others playing supporting roles. Amarone, a dry red, and Recioto, a sweet wine, follow the same blending patterns but are made from grapes left to dry for a few months before pressing. The drying process results in intense, full-bodied, heady and often, quite cerebral wines.

Soave, based on the indigenous Garganega grape, is the famous white here—made ultra popular in the 1970s at a time when quantity was more important than quality. Today one can find great values on whites from Soave, making it a perfect choice as an everyday sipper! But the more recent local, increased focus on low yields and high quality winemaking in the original Soave zone, now called Soave Classico, gives the real gems of the area. A fine Soave Classico will exhibit a round palate full of flavors such as ripe pear, yellow peach, melon or orange zest and have smoky and floral aromas and a sapid, fresh, mineral-driven finish.

Much of Italy’s Pinot grigio hails from the Veneto, where the crisp and refreshing style is easy to maintain; the ultra-popular sparkling wine, Prosecco, comes from here as well.
