Winemaker Notes

To Kalon always produces incredible wine! It is what makes procuring and working with that vineyard and its grapes such a joy. The 2011 To Kalon begins with a beautiful dark color that radiates from the glass. A wonderful, fumy, black fruit and cherry nose wafts upwards right away. 2011 may not be as opulent compared to other To Kalon vintages, but it is certainly one of the more structurally and aromatically refined. From the entirely natural yeast fermentation, we get detailed hints of wet stones, blackberry jam, raspberries and oak spice. The few moments hovering above the glass simply cannot allow enough time mention every nuance. This wine walks the tightrope of balance and doesn't falter. The travel from nose to the palate is nearly seamless in every way. The fruitful palate is somewhat warm and viscous, with lovely flavors of cherry and even bits of clove and spice that you get from 100% new French oak aging for 27 long months. The tannins show their stature and finesse and are even a touch on the youthful side, thus, more time in the bottle will yield nicely. Cellared correctly, this wine will be enjoyed through 2030 and longer.

Very ripe, with pleasant aromas of violet and plum, this quickly turns tannic and firm midpalate. Scents of ripe blackberry, wild berry, roasted herb, mocha and cedar fill in. This offers a rich mix of flavors despite the tannins. Best from 2015 through 2024.

Macauley Winery Image
The Macauley Vineyard label was originally established in St. Helena in the early 1980s by Ann Macauley Watson and for several years produced a very well received late harvest Sauvignon Blanc with help from renowned winemaker, Ric Forman.

In the late summer of 2000, Ann’s son Mac went to work for Rudd Estate in Oakville. After several months of winery work and education he was inspired to revive the family label, and, working with winemaker and childhood friend Kirk Venge, crushed his first grapes in October 2001.

Mac and Kirk have one goal: to source the highest quality fruit in Napa Valley and make wines of extraordinary depth and personality. The grapes they choose showcase the terroir of the vineyards and create a remarkable wine-drinking experience.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
