Winemaker Notes

The 2012 Quail Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir displays heady aromatics of cherry cola, ripe strawberries, baking spice, and sandalwood. The voluptuous mid-palate expresses pitted cherries, rose petals, and cardamom. The extended finish highlights fine tannins, surrounded by caramel, black tea, boysenberry, and ripe plum.

Professional Ratings

  • 93
There’s a surprising element of power to this Pinot Noir. Intense in dark cherry cola, clove and nutmeg, it offers a pronounced finish of wintery cardamom and caramel. The body is medium weight and the tannins smooth and silky.
  • 93
Bright and juicy with racy acidity and silky texture; smooth, juicy and fresh with depth, style and balance.

Lynmar Estate is situated on a unique and picturesque site with rolling vineyards bordered by the Laguna de Santa Rosa watershed. The vineyard, with vines over forty years old, 15 clones of Pinot Noir and 4 clones of Chardonnay has an array of canopy and rootstock combinations that yield exquisite fruit. Our state-of-the-art, gravity flow winery and caves is an ideal environment for making and aging ultra-premium wine. The gorgeous borders that surround the vineyards attract beneficial insects and hummingbirds, providing a natural barrier from pests.

Our vision is two-fold: (1) to meticulously caretake all the elements of the Estate, and continue to perfect and enhance the nuances of our winemaking, (2) to share it with people from all over the world who come here to have the experience of wine, food and place with a communion of friends, families, and colleagues.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
