Winemaker's Notes

Blend: 75% Sangiovese, 18% Merlot, 7% Petite Sirah

Luna 2006 Napa Valley Sangiovese is the deep color of garnets. The aromas of raspberries, black cherries, milk chocolate and rose petals come forward on the nose. The Merlot supports a plump blueberry core on the mid-palate, accented by chocolate and hints of orange.

An interesting mineral note appears on the back of the palate, and firm, silky tannins hold the wine together. The finish is a lush thirty second trail of perfectly ripe, but not overripe, cherries.

Drink through 2015.

We did not find this wine palatable at all, and I was surprised, because it rated fairly well and we had loved it the first time we'd had it, so reordered. We had let it breathe at first and didn't care for it, so then thought maybe chilling it would make it better, but it still left a very undesirable aftertaste. Perhaps a tainted bottle?

Given, this is my first Sangiovese, but we enjoyed it very much. Much better than a Merlot but not quite as fruity as a Syrah.

Learn About Napa Valley

It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
