The vineyards included in the appellation Montagny are spread throughout a number of villages in the Côte Chalonnaise, namely Montagny, Buxy, St.-Vallerin and Jully-les-Buxy. The high quality of the vines being a direct consequence of their limestone bedrock and admirably oriented slopes. The vineyard of "La Grande Roche" is quite high up on the hillsides, catching plenty of sunshine which aids the great concentration of flavours in the grapes.
The Montagny 1er Cru "La Grande Roche" has a clean light yellow colour. On the nose it will seduce you with its intense aromas of acacia and honey. In the mouth this wine is honest, fresh and powerful. With a nice length and with subtle notes of apricot, this excellent wine is tasting delicious now either as an apéritif or as an accompaniment to a fish dish with sauce.
In preparation for choosing a French chardonnay to serve at an upcoming family party, we tasted this against a Louis Latour 2008 Pouilly-Fuisse and a couple of other brands. We liked the Pouilly-Fuisse slightly better, but this was a very close second. This bottle was very pleasant, clean, crisp and a great example of French chardonnay at around this affordable price point.
