Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.0%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep ruby red color. A complex fruity nose of ripe cherries and blackberries, firm figs and notes of cedar, tobacco, cinnamon, white pepper, mint and bitter chocolate. Well-structured on the palate, offering remarkable balance, volume and consistency. A wine to be enjoyed alone or with friends, or whenever you wish to enjoy the pleasure of drinking a fine wine.

Critical Acclaim

"Bright ruby. Pungent cherry and redcurrant on the nose, with complicating notes of cracked pepper and tobacco. The palate offers youthfully tangy red berry and bitter cherry flavors, with a touch of licorice. Sweeter on the finish, which is spicy, focused and persistent. This lively midweight should age nicely on its balance over the short to mid term."

This wine begins to open up in the glass about 30-45 minutes. This wine needs a little time more to breathe. As it's being consumed 'slowly', the more I drink, the more I like it... a very tasty and graceful wine with nice body. Do not confuse with other Los Vascos. Look for 'Grande' reserve from 2009. They called this the Baby Lafite's Big Brother. It's one of the few that has the Lafite embolded logo on the bottle. It's the best I ever had at this price level.

Learn About Los Vascos Map ItMap It

Los Vascos traces its roots to approximately 1750 and to the original vineyard of Miguel Echenique. The vineyard passed down through the family throughout the succeeding centuries. The acquisition of 50% of Los Vascos by Rothschild (Lafite) in 1988 was the result of a careful search among more than one hundred Chilean wines for one that could meet their criteria for excellence. A...

Learn About Chile

(CHEE-lay) Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
