Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This is our second bottling of Syrah from Clover Creek Vineyard, located a few miles southwest of Santa Ynez. The vineyard's proximity to the Santa Ynez River moderates the warm temperatures characteristic of this part of the Valley. The resulting Syrah grapes achieve high sugar levels while retaining an amazing amount of natural acidity, giving the wine great balance.

The wine has a very dark, almost purple color. The aromas are an intense mixture of boysenberries and blackberries with a hint of oak vanillin. On the palate the wine's richness is immediately evident with succulent flavors of wild berries, which is then quickly lightened by the liveliness of its high acidity. This gives the wine a long, refreshing finish.

Critical Acclaim

"Saturated ruby-red. Smoky raspberry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by pungent herbs, violet and minerals; very syrah. Fleshy and smooth, with sweet red and dark berry flavors, well-knit tannins and a slow-mounting spiciness. Turns firmer on the finish while maintaining its sweet fruit. I like this wine's balance and find it drinkable right now, but it should reward a few more years of aging, at least."
