Winemaker Notes

Entirely from the 3.7 acre Ugolaia cru vineyard planted in 1978 with severely selected grafts. While great now, it will continue to develop and improve over the next two decades. Density of the vines is twice as high as the remaining vineyards' – over 1,800 per acre versus 1,150/a. – with crop yields of 1.1 kilo per rootstock. Élevage is 36 months in Slavonian oak (11-20 hl.) followed by 18 months of bottle age.

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolaia, from a small old-vine parcel on the estate, floats onto the palate with endless layers of perfumed fruit. Deceptively medium in body, the Ugolaia possesses remarkable depth. Sweet pine, menthol, red cherries and spices meld together seamlessly on the long finish. With time in the glass, the wine gains more volume as the fruit emerges and the bouquet becomes even more expansive. This is a gorgeous Brunello from Lisini. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Finely made in a bold, international style, this shows top-quality fruit and a lot of oak. There's tension underneath, taut acidity and a sleek black mushroom character to the tannin. Ready for a steakhouse.

Located a few miles south of Montalcino itself, at Sant'Angelo in Colle, the fourteenth-century towered villa is steeped in one of the appellation’s most beautiful and "wildest" landscapes, surrounded only by woodland and vineyards at an altitude of 1312 feet above sea level. Typically built in stone and terracotta tiles, the villa itself blends into this natural backdrop with a harmony that is all Tuscan. The Lisini estate, covering a total of 380 acres and comprising one of the finest, most historical crus in the Montalcino appellation, has been in the Lisini family since the early 1700s. Under the tutelage of Elina Lisini, this superb terroir has fulfilled its exceptional promise. Located in the hills a little south of Montalcino itself, overlooking the Orcia valley (an area conducive to full, potent Brunellos), it was one of the very first to produce and bottle this noble wine. The vineyards now cover almost 49 acres and include the high-rising, 3.7- acre cru of Ugolaia. Lisini's unique soil, together with state-of-the-art vinification, yield a model Montalcino range.

Among Italy's elite red grape varieties, Sangiovese has the perfect intersection of bright red fruit and savory earthiness and is responsible for the best red wines of Tuscany. While it is best known as the chief component of Chianti, it is also the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and reaches the height of its power and intensity in the complex, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Somm Secret—Sangiovese doubles under the alias, Nielluccio, on the French island of Corsica where it produces distinctly floral and refreshing reds and rosés.

Famous for its bold, layered and long-lived red, Brunello di Montalcino, the town of Montalcino is about 70 miles south of Florence, and has a warmer and drier climate than that of its neighbor, Chianti. The Sangiovese grape is king here, as it is in Chianti, but Montalcino has its own clone called Brunello.

The Brunello vineyards of Montalcino blanket the rolling hills surrounding the village and fan out at various elevations, creating the potential for Brunello wines expressing different styles. From the valleys, where deeper deposits of clay are found, come wines typically bolder, more concentrated and rich in opulent black fruit. The hillside vineyards produce wines more concentrated in red fruits and floral aromas; these sites reach up to over 1,600 feet and have shallow soils of rocks and shale.

Brunello di Montalcino by law must be aged a minimum of four years, including two years in barrel before realease and once released, typically needs more time in bottle for its drinking potential to be fully reached. The good news is that Montalcino makes a “baby brother” version. The wines called Rosso di Montalcino are often made from younger vines, aged for about a year before release, offer extraordinary values and are ready to drink young.
