Winemaker Notes

While Lichen's 2015 Moonglow Pinot Noir will certainly stand the test of time, we intentionally craft it to be quaffable in its youth. The 2015 Moonglow, made with 100% Lichen Estate fruit, fills the palate with a light cherry flush, lingers on the mid-palate, delicate and poised, finishing with anise and spice, and everything nice. The texture is sleek and refined, with caramel and vanilla bean accents at the core and ripe tart cherry and plum flavors. Velvety tannins provide framework and structure, and dark chocolate notes add complexity to the finish.

From an organically farmed hillside planted in 2008, this is trim and spicy—a classical Anderson Valley pinot noir. It’s light in color, with sandy tannins and a bright red-cherry flavor that gains detail as it spins with smoky, woodsy aromas in the finish. Ready to drink with roast chicken.

Lichen Estate, California
Lichen Estate Winery Image
The 203-acre Lichen Estate sits at the heart of Anderson Valley, half way between Boonville and Philo. They have planted seven acres of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vines in 2008 on meter-by-meter spacing, the same used for Grand Cru vineyards of Burgundy and Champagne. We have farmed it organically from the outset. This singular vineyard produces singular wines.

Anderson Valley, located in Mendocino County just above Sonoma County, is one of California’s coolest AVAs, allowing it a long growing season. Only 15 miles long, the region makes a slice eastward through the mountains, from the frigid Pacific Ocean. Dramatic diurnal temperature variations here preserve grape acidity and thus freshness in the finished wines. These are prime conditions for growing Pinot Noir, and the valley produces many fine versions. Characteristics of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir typically include crisp acidity, cranberry and strawberry notes as well as earthy notes of forest floor and mushroom.

Still Pinot Noir, however, is only part of the story. Pinot Noir, along with Chardonnay, are also grown for Anderson Valley’s exceptional sparkling wines. Produced via the traditional method, these offer a classic toasty note from lees aging, bright, complex fruit notes and a clean, refreshing character.
