Johannes Leitz runs the Rheingau estate today. Johannes is the latest member of the Leitz family to take charge of the winery. He gained his vineyard experience at the Johnnishof estate of Hans Hermann Eser, as well as at Eltville College.
Soils types in the Rheingau, Germany vineyard are typical of the region, dominated by slate, with a small quantity of Burgundy varieties planted alongside the Riesling. Some Burgundian winery practices are also in place here, including prolonged contact with the lees.
The steep, south-facing slopes overlooking the Rhine river are some of the most enviable in Germany. The region's wines are based almost completely on Riesling and all picking is done by hand. A bit further south than the Mosel, Rheingau grapes get some stronger sun, which is evident by the richer wines produced.
