Alcohol By Volume: 12.0%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Freshly cut limes, lemon sorbet and hints of Granny Smith apples combine with pronounced floral notes, hints of sweet spice and fragrant kaffir lime leaf. The palate is taut and fine with bursting Tahitian lime and lemon pith. Lively and racy acid underpins the palate throughout. Mineral and flint characters make this vintage one of Leeuwin's finest.

Critical Acclaim

"Pale quartz; one of the most famous and instantaneously recognisable rieslings in Australia thanks to John Olsen's frogs on the label. The region's maritime climate means no matter how well it is made - very well indeed here - it is in a different category to Great Southern rieslings, and most is (sensibly) enjoyed when young and fresh."
91 Points

"Bright straw. Displays nervy, mineral-laced citrus fruit and floral scents, plus a building note of quinine. Dry and steely on the palate, offering tangy grapefruit and green apple flavors and a hint of tarragon. The refreshingly bitter finish displays very good clarity and bite."

Totally sublime. Zinging acidity against backdrop of lime. This is my favorite wine of the year so far. Serioiusly good.

After an extensive search in 1972 to identify the most suitable Australian area for the production of premium varietal wines, Robert Mondavi singled out a small plot of land in the Margaret River region. At the time a cattle farm, Leeuwin Esate evolved under the direction of owners Denis and Tricia Horgan, with Mondavi acting as a consultant and mentor. The initial vineyards were...

Learn About Margaret River

Located in the southwest area of Western Australia, the country's largest state, Margaret River wine growing region is on a peninsula jutting out into the Indian Ocean. The climate is reminiscent of Bordeaux in some ways, leading many winemakers to plant grapes of that nature, such as Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot. Other varieties that have found results are Chardonnay & Riesling.

Learn About Riesling

Riesling (REEZ-leeng) The Riesling grape is happiest in a cooler climate, one that fosters its slow and steady ripening. Often assumed to be the producer of only sweet wines, Riesling is a fascinating grape of many faces. From bone dry to lusciously sweet, this variety is delicious at any sugar level with its intense aromas and steely acidity. Most popular in...
