Winemaker Notes

Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2006 - #16!

The Langmeil estate was originally founded in 1844. The first Shiraz vines, planted at that time, still produce premium Shiraz today, making Langmeil the site of the oldest producing vineyard in the Barossa Valley. Langmeil Winery's philosophy is to produce 100% Barossa premium quality wine made from varieties that excel here in one of the oldest wine producing regions in Australia.

"For a wine that doesn't feel big or broad, this Shiraz has amazing depth of flavor and focus, delivering a seamless package of blueberry, currant, plum and vanilla-spice flavors that fan out over the palate. Has compelling purity and impressive persistence. Best from 2008 through 2016."

Langmeil, Australia
Langmeil Winery Video

Langmeil is a blend of Barossa’s cultural beginnings and a family’s modern commitment to world-class, old vine winemaking. Once a trading village established in 1842, this remarkable place is a captivating pocket of Australia’s wine and vine history that is a must when visiting the Barossa.

Owned by the Lindner family, whose own mark on the Barossa spans six-generations of farming, food, community, and wine, Langmeil is renowned for its preservation of old vines and the making of distinguished wines from these cherished sites.

At the pinnacle of its winemaking is The Freedom 1843 Shiraz, made from what is understood to be the world’s oldest surviving shiraz vineyard believed planted in 1843 at the heart of this historical patch of Barossa earth.
