Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Grown on deep, gravelly soil, this Cabernet-Sauvignon has gentle acidity and fine-grained tannins. The extreme diurnal temperature fluctuations and the virtual absence of rain during the growing season guarantee freshness of fruit, without excessive herbal or eucalyptus notes.

The wine is aged around 8 months in used oak barrels the help the wine develop itself, enhancing but not overpowering its varietal character.

I was absolutely floored when I tasted this wine! The 2012 Lagar de Bezana Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon simple explodes with varietal good and local pride. Rich beyond words, yet not so big as to intimidate, the wine brings very pure tight-knit black currant aromas and flavors to the fore; long and smooth, young but ready for action, this wine takes Chile into the realm of international stardom. (Tasted: January 26, 2013, Valle de Cachapoal, Chile)

A balanced and delicious red with blueberry, chocolate and hazelnut character. Medium body, fine tannins and a clean finish. Elegant and pretty.

Our history starts in the 1990's, when the entrepreneur Ricardo Bezanilla, owner of a radio station in Santiago, wanted to produce his own wine. He chose an area in the upper part of the Cachapoal Valley, at the feet of the Andes Mountains, where he grubbed up an apple orchard and planted Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. After a few years he was forced to replace Merlot with other varieties, as the stony soils didn’t support the variety well enough. Little by littlw he started experimenting with other varieties, such as Petit Verdot, Carmenere, Malbec, Grenache and Mourvèdre, to complement the original Cabernet-Sauvignon and Syrah.

We have learned a lot throughout the years, and from modest beginnings, Lagar de Bezana is now widely sold in Chile and exported to more than ten countries. Nowadays, the family of Ricardo Bezanilla continue to grow and expand his important legacy.
