Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.9%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2009 Axel Cabernet Sauvignon has notes of plum, cedar, tobacco, and sweet ripe fruit.

Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Critical Acclaim

"This is a rugged, full-bodied and flavorful Cabernet. Aromas of gritty black cherry and cassis come with herbal undercurrents. The palate is tight, with firm tannins and foresty, lightly herbal flavors of cassis, wild berry, juniper and chocolate."

Style: Big & Bold
This is a rugged Cab as the WE review states. The aromas are able to be enjoyed while holding a glass at waist level. I've never had a wine with that strong of an aroma. Black cherry, juniper and cassis assault the palate. The tannins are firm. This is a bold Cab. Drinking today, I'd give it a 3 star. It should improve to be a very nice Cab with aging so I'll give it a 4 star overall. Cellar this one.

Learn About LaPlaya

In 1952, patriarch Søren Axelsen left his native Copenhagen to travel the world. Eventually, he settled in California to grow his own grapes. But he never forgot the remarkable growing regions he had seen in Chile, in particular Colchagua Valley, which showed such great potential to produce world-class wines. By 1989, he had realized his dream, founding Viña La Playa alongside...

Learn About Chile

(CHEE-lay) Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
