Pinot Noir from Central Otago, New Zealand
A full purple magenta color. The nose is lush with ripe dark Pinot fruits. Plum, black cherry, licorice and spice dominate while a lovely smokiness from high quality French oak adds dimension.
The palate is a powerful Pinot statement, rich dark, sweet fruits fill the mouth and layer as the palate builds. Chocolate, mocha and licorice support the fruit intensity while fine, ripe, powdery tannins add weight, richness and length.
A definite keeper, this wine has the structure to age for 8 to 10 years.

Suave and fine-grained but also serious and dense, with suggestions of raspberry liqueur and dark chocolate. A nicely concentrated young Pinot Noir with plenty of palate presence, not to mention good sappy life in the mouth. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent. I'd hold this for a year or two before pulling the cork."

The company is fully owned by Konrad and Sigrun Hengstler. They originally migrated from Germany to Australia and then, having decided to become involved in the wine industry, made the move from there to New Zealand to plant Sauvignon Blanc grapes in Marlborough. Riesling was added with the first planting to produce a dry, austere style Riesling. The plantings also include Pinot Noir, the ideal red grape to suit the diurnal climate of Marlborough. The southernmost vineyards of the world lie here in Central Otago. Unlike most other New Zealand appellations, Central Otago is inland - nestled right in the middle of the southern island. Its lack of proximity to water creates weather more continental than maritime, leading to big temperature shifts – hot during the day, significantly cooler at night.

The best Pinot Noir we've had in a while. Plenty of fruit, but not too much. Subtle complexity.25/25/2011Good pinot for the price. Not much here in terms of fruit or acidity, but a good bottle for a week night.
