The newly formed region of Geographe, located in Western Australia, is defined by several river valleys that descend from the hilly region to form several distinct micro-climates. The overall climate for the area is warm, sunny, and dry with cooling ocean breezes, making it an ideal place to grow wine grapes.
Killerby was founded by Dr. Barry Killerby and his wife in 1972, at a time when there were no vines planted no where near the area. It was a huge leap of faith, and it has paid off. The property is lucky to have a plentiful supply of source water beneath its limestone soil and large Tuart trees that provide protection from the ocean breezes and from frost. A strong maritime influence is evident, as the vineyard is located 1 mile from the Indian Ocean.
All grapes are hand harvested at the vineyard, and ample pruning takes place to ensure high quality juice. All of the wines are hand crafted, with special attention to every detail. Killerby produces four wines, Chardonnay, Semillon / Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Chardonnay is fermented in French oak barrels, with varying amounts of malolactic fermentation carried out, depending on the vintage. It is a full-bodied, well-integrated wine. The Shiraz is fermented in 30% new American oak, and then aged in 1 and 2 year old American oak. The Cabernet Sauvignon production varies from the Shiraz in that no oak is used during primary fermentation, followed by aging in French oak barriques.
