Alcohol By Volume: 15.0%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Along with the finest Rieslings, the Clare Valley has produced some of the most sought after Shiraz wines in the world. Hand picked Shiraz fruit was selected from six vineyards throughout the Leasingham Valley with each being fermented separately, basket pressed and aged for 22 months in a combination of new and older French and American small oak casks. Intensely varietal with lifted aromas of black olives, spicy plums and charry oak characters predominate. These flavours carry through to the stylish and textured palate producing a seamless and persistent finish.

To the eye the wine is an intense, inky/crimson red with distinct youthful, purple hues.

The aroma has lifted sweet plum and berry fruits combined and integratde with menthol, char and smoky oak characters.

On the palate its a great example of a full-bodied Clare Valley Shiraz, the palate being richly layered and textured. Chocolate and plum fruits create sweetness with classy French and American oak integrates and supports providing seamless length and flavour persistence.

Critical Acclaim

"This firm red shows fascinating cola and coffee overtones to its cherry and raspberry flavors, picking up a mineral note as the finish rolls on and on. Offers depth and transparency. Best from 2012 through 2020."

"The 2006 Covenant Shiraz, drawn from Kilikanoon's base in the Clare Valley, adds some savory, herbal notes vaguely reminiscent of rhubarb to a lush, creamy base built on blueberry-blackberry fruit and hints of licorice and espresso. Concentrated and long on the finish, gradually turning from creamy to slightly dusty in texture. Drink now-2020."
92 Points

"Bright colour; the oak sits apart from the fruit at this point, but there is polished blueberry and spice on the bouquet; ample levels of sweet fruit, the finish is dry and very firm."
92 Points

"Inky ruby. Highly expressive aromas of blackberry, Indian spices, dried flowers and exotic apricot pit. Sweet, fresh and broad on the palate, offering vivid red and dark berry flavors, supple texture and mounting minerality. The apricot note repeats on the long, juicy, pure finish. This is delicious right now."

Learn About Clare Valley

Known for its Rieslings, all in screw cap since the year 2000, the wines of Clare Valley are distinctive. The Riesling here is dry, dry, dry. Delicate yet firm, these wines won't remind you of Germany or Alsace - they have a flavor all their own. The lime flavors and zesty acidity make the wine perfect for summer sipping or pacific rim food (aka, seafood). Notable Facts Since...

Learn About Syrah/Shiraz

(seh-RAH/shee-RAHZ) It's a Smokin' Grape Syrah and Shiraz - same grape, different name. It's a popular and adept variety, growing in multiple regions and creating many different styles of wine. The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
