Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Taylor Peak Merlot is rich and round, with ripe plum, cooked cherries and chocolate flavors. Medium-bodied with a lingering finish. Made with 100% Merlot.

Critical Acclaim

"The vineyard gets the benefit of cool breezes via the Petaluma Gap. The structure is very polished, with firm tannins and brisk acids framing blackberry, cherry, blueberry, cola and spice flavors. Notable for its richness and finesse, and a great success for a California Merlot."
92 Points

"A brilliant example of 100% estate-grown Merlot, the 2005 Taylor Peak Merlot from the high-elevation (1,200-1,400 ft.) Bennett Valley vineyards of Jess Jackson's Jackson Park Vineyard, exhibits a fabulous nose of red and blue fruits intermixed with crushed rocks, strawberry jam, and some subtle oak. The wine is full-bodied, opulent, rich, but also structured in the finish. This is a Merlot that is going to be a keeper."

What if there was a way to produce from this abundance, a single outstanding cuvee that offered both quality and value? The result, first released in 1983, was Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay, a rich, round and flavorful wine, made with hand-crafted...

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...

Learn About Merlot

Merlot(mehr-LOW) No second fiddle Merlot is coming back into its own. High popularity led to mass production, which then led to a backlash towards the variety (remember Miles in Sideways?). But passionate Merlot producers, and of course the right bank of Bordeaux, continued to produce quality versions of this grape. Merlot remains the principle grape of top chateaux in St...
