Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This is a youthful wine showing fresh ripe mulberries and plums with a spicy undertone.

The perfect all-rounder and a must for every wine enthusiast. Enjoy this wine with your favorite dish and friends.

59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot

Critical Acclaim

"The 2011 Petit Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot has a superb bouquet with simple but fresh raspberry and wilds strawberry fruit laced with cedar and sandalwood aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and fine tannins. There is just a smattering of dark chocolate with a wonderfully focused, almost Old World finish. Excellent."

Very elegant and sophisticated young wine. Well balanced, not one flavor standing out too much above the others. Very smooth and easy drinking. I agree with the other reviewer about stocking up on a case!

Good Bordeaux-style red wine for a very affordable price. There are certainly better Bordeaux's but if you're on a budget this one isn't too bad.

Learn About Ken Forrester Map ItMap It

In 1993, hospitality industry veteran Ken Forrester and his wife Teresa purchased the historic Scholtzenhof estate, nestled at the base of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. Originally established in 1689 as Zandberg, the property is one of the oldest wine farms in the Cape. Ken enlisted the help of his winemaker friend Martin Meinert in replanting and revitalizing the vineyards, with an aim to craft a white wine that could rival any in the world! And so it was that Ken Forrester Vineyards was established, with a focus on Chenin Blanc production.

Learn About South Africa

South Africa A long history of growing grapes and making wine, but less of a history on exporting it, and even lesser on the quality aspect. At the turn of the century (1900, that is), a surplus of wine in South Africa created a hierarchy of cooperatives, the biggest and best known being KWV. This organization seemed to favor quantity over quality and had most...
