1999 was our finest vintage ever, through during the unusually cold winter, it didn't look promising. Frost hit the Dunnigan Hills for the first time in 17 years, and initially we feared a substantial loss to the crop. Spring however was mild, with light rains; summer was perfect, with daytimes in the high 80s to low 90s,
and night temperatures in the mid 50s. Mild, dry weather was the rule for fall, and with no fear of rain damage, grapes hung on the vines until optimum ripeness.
Lush, aromatic crushed raspberry and blackberry flavors are underscored
with subtle oak and a dash of black pepper. The tannins are full yet
balanced. Serving suggestions for this hearty red: pork adobo, chicken
chipotle, or vindaloo lamb curry.
