The 2010 Basket Pressed Shiraz is dark purple with a medium to full intensity. Filled with aromas of roast beetroot, fleshy blackberries with subtle tobacco leaf and savory dried spice. Juicy, fresh briary berry fruits along with quince flavors, follow on the palate, with a rich, savory finish. The medium to full-bodied wine is held by fine acidity, as well as grainy tannins, underscored by a hint of wood smoke derived from the maturation in larger oak casks.

Established in 1890 by Australian born brothers Herbert & Frederick Kay, it is the oldest McLaren Vale winery still in the hands of the founding family, with Herbert's grandson Colin Kay continuing the family winemaking tradition. Bordering St. Vincent's Gulf, 24 miles south of Adelaide, the Kay Brothers McLaren Vale vineyards grace the rolling foothills of the Southern Mt. Lofty Ranges. The winery is located at the top of a hill three miles from the McLaren Vale Township & the cellar door, which is part of the original winery complex, boasts some stunning panoramic views of the surrounding picturesque valleys and hillsides. The Kay's are specialists of traditional grape growing & winemaking, utilizing grapes from their own 54 acre vineyards to produce their wines. The main grape variety grown is Shiraz (including the 1892 planted Block 6) followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Mataro (Mourvedre) & Muscat Blanc. Colin's winemaking philosophy is to make rich full-bodied fruit-driven wines (using the original open fermenters and basket press) with a minimum of 18 months ageing in small American oak casks. McLaren Vale is home to the oldest Australian vineyard, with grapes planted in 1838. It's a coastal area, the Indian Ocean bordering the west, which leads to a cooling factor that prevents the grapes from getting too hot. In all, the climate is a perfect one for the vines.
Notable FactsIn McLaren Vale, there are vines as far as the eye can see. As in other parts of Australia, Shiraz and Grenache are the top grapes of the region, with some Cabernet Sauvignon planted as well. While red rules, whites are able to hold their own here too. With the warm yet reasonable Mediterranean climate, white grapes like Chardonnay, Semillon and even some Sauvignon Blanc grow well. The wines are round and smooth and the producers in the regions are excellent.

I was rather disappointed by this particular wine. The flavor was broad and not particularly deep in complexity - rather like a plank. 2 of my guests liked it, though, and so I waited on it a little wondering it needed to breathe longer. It did improve some, but not enough to make me buy, again. Still have one bottle left. This wine was part of a shipment that arrived damaged due to the great Polar Vortex of early December. Thus, I am unsure whether this particular wine was affected or not.KarenDFW - Napa, CA510/21/2013
