Winemaker Notes

The Judd's Hill Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of cab, merlot and franc from our own hillside vineyards, as well as cabernet from two of our favorite neighbors: the Howell Mountain vineyard of Clark Claudon and the Rutherford Bench ranch of Julie and Pat Garvey. This is a blend truly made in heaven. It combines the highly structured tannins we have all come to respect from the slopes of Napa Valley with the silkiness of grapes grown on the valley floor...a great cuvee which should mellow into a wine of beautiful finesse.

I would describe the wine as having a moderate-to-full body with medium tannins. The fruit flavors are highly extracted, leaning toward bright black cherries and black raspberries, with overtones of earth and cedar, coupled with nuances of oak.

Alcohol: 13.8% by volume

Judd's Hill, California
We have made wine in The Napa Valley since the 1970s, and continue to produce signature wines that are fruit-driven and concentrated while remaining well-balanced and food-friendly. Taking an intimate and personal approach to our winemaking, we limit our annual production to less than 3,000 cases.

In addition to our Judd’s Hill wines, we have produced custom wine in small lots since 1991 for aspiring vintners under our Custom MicroCrush program. All of our Judd’s Hill and MicroCrush wines are made in our certified Napa Valley Green Winery designed to minimize our impact on the land. The use of environmentally efficient drainage, solar lighting, and an aggressive recycling and composting program are a few ways that our winery uses smart design to make a difference.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
