    Winemaker Notes

In 1997, a year of extremes, a prolonged summer heat wave contributed to one of the warmest growing seasons on record until an unseasonable cold spell in the latter half of August all but shut down the ripening process. The growing season culminated in September, with warm temperatures causing everything to ripen at once. Harvested fruit contained the intensity of flavor we would associate with a small crop, yet the 1997 growing season yielded one of the most abundant harvests on record. Our cool climate vineyards in Carneros and Yountville weathered the temperate extremes well, and Viognier fruit ripened steadily, producing a wine with delicate notes of honeysuckle and peach. When combined with grapes from the warmer St. Helena area, the finished blend displays ripe, concentrated flavors and a crisp, clean finish. Viognier is an ideal companion with seafood, shellfish and poultry dishes.

Joseph Phelps Vineyards is a family-owned winery committed to crafting world class, estate-grown wines. Founded in 1973 when Joe Phelps purchased a former cattle ranch near St. Helena in the Napa Valley, the winery now controls and farms nearly 375 acres of vines on eight estate vineyards in St. Helena, the Stags Leap District, Oakville, Rutherford, Oak Knoll District, Carneros and South Napa Valley. In 1999, the Phelps family added 100 acres of vineyard property near the town of Freestone on the Sonoma Coast, where Phelps now grows Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Phelps is best known for its flagship Napa Valley blend of red Bordeaux varietals, Insignia, first produced in 1974. Awarded Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" in 2005, Insignia is widely regarded as a qualitative benchmark for California winemaking.
