winemaker's notes:

This is the first estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon bottling from Joseph Phelps. The blend contains five of our seven estate vineyards: the Home Ranch in St. Helena, Suscol in South Napa, Yountville in the Oak Knoll District, Banca Dorada in Rutherford and Las Rocas in the Stags Leap District. This is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon with aromatics of blackberry, plum and black cherries intertwined with characteristics of chocolate covered espresso beans and licorice. The wine covers the palate with concentrated, balanced tannins and a long, silky finish.

alcohol by volume: 14.5%
critical acclaim:

"Expensive, yes, but it shows the drama and interest that a Joseph Phelps Cabernet predictably delivers. It's rich and ripe in blackberry, cherry, currant and oak flavors, with wonderful tannins and a dry finish. Best now. "

Wine Enthusiast

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a big, rich wine bursting with dark fruit. This is a fairly immediate style, some serious tannins notwithstanding. Smoke, tobacco and licorice develop in the glass, adding complexity and nuance. The powerful, fruit-driven finish is totally rewarding, but this will be even better in a few years' time."

The Wine Advocate

"Deep, bright ruby. Aromas of blackberry, crushed cassis and graphite. Juicy, spicy and fresh, with very good intensity and lift to the sweet dark berry and spice flavors. Primary, fruit-driven wine with a persistent, floral finish. Firmly tannic but nicely balanced from the start. A lovely vintage for this bottling."
