The 2010 GOTT 10 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has complex aromas of blackberries, black cherries, mocha and dried flowers. The flavors are elegant with balanced acidity and integrated tannins. The wine opens with dark, concentrated fruit on the palate, velvety tannins on the mid-palate, followed by a long and silky finish.

Blackberry jam, grilled herbs, smoke and melted road tar are all layered into the precise, yet powerful finish. This isn’t as generous as many other 2010s, but it is quite beautiful just the same as it continued to open up and flesh out with time in the glass. The 2010 is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. "

Napa scion Joel Gott was born to make wine. His grandfather was winemaker and president of Inglenook in the 1960s and 1970s while his father, Cary Gott, is the founder of Montevina and continues to consult for wineries such as D.R. Stephens.
In addition to Joel's uncanny blending ability, he has privileged access to many of the best and as yet undiscovered fruit sources in the Napa Valley. Joel Gott wines are therefore remarkable values, offering gobs of classic California fruit, good structure and excellent balance.

It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard lands were scooped up and vines were planted throughout the county. A number of wineries emerged, from large conglomerates to small boutiques to cult classics. Cabernet Sauvignon is definitely the grape of choice here, with many winemakers also focusing on Bordeaux Blends. Whites are usually Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Notable FactsWithin the Napa Valley lie smaller sub-AVAs that lend even more character specifics to the wines. Furthest south is Carneros, followed by Yountville, Oakville & Rutherford. Above those two is St.-Helena and finally, just grated an AVA, Calistoga. These areas are situated on the valley floor and are known for creating rich, smooth Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. There are a few mountain regions as well, nestled on the slopes overlooking the valley AVAs. Those include Howell Mountain, Stags Leap and Mount Veeder. Wines from the mountain regions are often more structured and firm, benefiting from more time in the bottle to evolve and soften.

Down south, Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley is well-known for its Rhône blends, as well as cool-climate varieties like Pinot and Chardonnay. The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.

Big, dark purple-red color, full bodied. The nose starts out on the medium-small side but grows with air and time. Lovely varietal character with boysenberry and oak primary aromas and secondary notes of cedar, leather, cassis. Big, mouth-filling flavors; fruit, acid and tannin to spare, a slight hint of bitterness in the finish which is more of an asset to the complexity than a liability. There is too much alcohol in both the nose and flavors for me right out of the bottle but and hour or two after opening this is not so prominent and the nose is coming on nicely.
