Alcohol By Volume: 15.0%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This is a mature, refi ned cabernet sauvignon, with a bouquet of complexity, with lifted aromas of cedar, menthol, blackcurrant, cigar box, roasted capsicum, nutmeg and marzipan. The palate is soft and supple, displaying a textural component that has been made more prominent by extended maturation in the bottle. Long fi ne grained tannins are apparent, with a vibrancy of fresh fruit that shows potential for further development with age.

Critical Acclaim

"A new offering that I have never tasted before is the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, The Benbournie, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 14 months in French oak. This spectacular effort admirably demonstrates what can be achieved in Clare Valley with Cabernet. Gorgeous peppery, minty, black currant and flowery scents jump from the glass of this inky/purple-hued wine. Full-bodied, powerful, intense and rich, with notes of roasted meats, dried herbs, and spice, good purity and a sensational finish, it is accessible now and should drink well for 15-20 years."

"For a late-release 2002, this is still very youthful, packing layers of rich cassis and blackberry fruit into a soft jacket of vanilla, cedar and toasted coconut. It’s full-bodied, lush and velvety—a simply terrific Cabernet that should prove to have excellent aging potential as well. Drink now–2020"
93 Points

"Firm in texture, with a plush layer of cherry and red currant fruit pushing through, shaded with fresh red pepper and sage character as the finish persists. A distinctive wine with an aristocratic feel. Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2010 through 2014. 100 cases imported."
92 Points

"Deep red. Spicy red- and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by zesty mint, anise and rose, with an undercurrent of suave oak spice. Fleshy and sweet, with ripe cassis and kirsch flavors given depth by mocha and licorice; picks up dried herbs and espresso on the finish. Became riper and more dark-fruit-driven with air, but at no expense of clarity."
91 Points

"Deep colour and equally deep-flavoured wine, with blackcurrant fruit at the extremely ripe end of the scale, the tannins and oak well-handled. Cork."

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
