Winemaker Notes
The original pavilion and pitch have been retained. The vineyard was actually planted around the cricket pitch. So a little piece of history has been preserved. Today this vineyard provides the majority of fruit for our new wine, The Cover Drive, Cabernet Sauvignon.
Selected parcels of fruit from our other cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Clare Valley have been carefully blended to produce a wine that is rich, soft and approachable.
Brilliant deep red in color with subtle cigar box aromas, dark berries, sweet mints and vanilla. The palate offers luscious blackberry fruit, fully-rounded with velvety tannins and sweet oak from 18 months in American and French barriques. A wine that can be enjoyed now or will reward those who have the patience to cellar for 2-3 years.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The outstanding 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon The Cover Drive, a knock-out value, represents one of the finest bargains in Cabernet Sauvignon in the marketplace. Terrific minty, black currant aromas jump from the glass of this savory, fleshy, medium to full-bodied, silky-textured, luscious Cabernet. Readers who are wondering about Jim Barry’s flagship offering, the Shiraz Armagh, should refer to issue #155, where both the 2001 and 2002 received fabulous reviews. I have not yet tasted the unreleased 2003 The Armagh. However, I did recently taste the 1989 Shiraz The Armagh, and rated it 93 points. It is a magnificent wine still on the upside of its potential. These cuvees can easily last 20-25 years.
