Style: Earthy & Spicy

Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.
Ratings Pedigree:

Winemaker's Notes

Intense purple in color. Red fruit, leather and spice. Complex, with flavors of licorice and spice and silky tannins. A food-friendly wine which will perfectly match grilled lamb, pork and assorted cheeses.

Blend: 33% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 33% Mourvèdre

Bee Helpful: For every bottle of Jean-Luc Colombo Cotes du Rhone Les Les Abeilles ("THE BEES" in French) purchased, a donation will support honeybee research and edulcation.

Help save the honey bees! Honey bee colonies are collapsing at an alarming rate. People rely on honey bees to pollinate more than 90% of flowering crops - including many of the fruit and food items we eat. Research is needed to help understand the causes of honey bee declines and restore and protect healthy colonies.

Rating:
(9/14/2013)
Style: Smooth & Supple
This Rhone blend seems young, slightly too tart, and a bit bland. I think there are much nicer examples of this blend available. There was a reasonable smoothness to the finish, but not much berry depth or complexity.

Learn About Jean-Luc Colombo Map ItMap It

A native of Marseilles, Colombo first developed a strong admiration for the wines of the Rhone Valley in the late 1970s as a pharmacy student. A devotee of the Syrah grape, Colombo was convinced that the northern Rhone appellation of Cornas offered enormous and, at the time, unrecognized potential for producing super-quality Syrah wines. After earning degrees in pharmacy and...

Learn About Cotes du Rhone

A Cote of Many Grapes The appellation of Cotes du Rhone encompasses much of the land of the area, not to mention much of the wine - over two-thirds of the wine produced here is of the Cotes-du-Rhone appellation. Wines here need only be from the Cotes de Rhone geographic area (which is fairly large) and consist of one or more of the 22 varieties permitted. Being such a wide...

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
