Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.4%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This well-structured, medium-bodied Merlot shows lots of raspberry, vanilla and spice notes in the nose that complement rich black fruit and cocoa flavors in the mouth. Generous in texture and length, it should continue to improve with age for the next 8-12 years.

Critical Acclaim

"Tight, focussed and impressive for the depth of its cherry, currant, espresso and wet slate flavors, which are coiled tautly on the expressive finish, playing against a layer of refined tannins. Best from 2013 through 2018."
92 Points

"Medium red. Aromatic nose combines plum, redcurrant, wild herbs and licorice. Suave and sweet, with nicely integrated acidity giving shape and definition to the intense red fruit flavors. Finishes with broad, smooth tannins and very good length and lift. This has the structure to develop in bottle for at least five or six years. "

Family-owned. Artisan winemaking. Acclaimed Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. You’ve heard dozens of wineries make these claims, and while these statements are certainly true of Januik wines, they seem a little cliché too.

So rather than tell you who we are, we invite you to try our wines or visit us at our new Woodinville winery and let us earn your trust. If Januik becomes your go-to wine, we’ve done our job.

Learn About Yakima Valley

Washington's first appellation, Yakima Valley has over one third of the state's vineyards. The rolling foothills of the Cascades give the vines a good sun angle, so grapes are well-ripened come harvest time. Merlot dominates the plantings here, creating elegant wines with complex fruit, herbs & structure. Syrah continues to grow in popularity, creating blanced wines with...

Learn About Merlot

Merlot(mehr-LOW) No second fiddle Merlot is coming back into its own. High popularity led to mass production, which then led to a backlash towards the variety (remember Miles in Sideways?). But passionate Merlot producers, and of course the right bank of Bordeaux, continued to produce quality versions of this grape. Merlot remains the principle grape of top chateaux in St...
