Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Each year some of our finest Riesling vineyards produce grapes that stand head and shoulders above the rest. We choose several of these vineyard blocks, mark them for Genesis, and pick them at optimal ripeness. The result is a beautifully balanced, intensely aromatic Riesling. The 2008 vintage has inviting aromas of lemon-lime, melon, peach, guava and vanilla. It is off-dry with a refreshingly crisp acidity, an underpinning of minerality, and tangerine/apricot on the finish. The Genesis Riesling is a great foil for spicy dishes. Pair it with tandoori chicken, Szechuan beef stir-fry, or smoky, spicy barbecue spare ribs.

Critical Acclaim

"Hogue's Genesis bottling is far more limited than the winery's other Rieslings, and offers dimensions in terms of concentration and grip. Though just 12.6 alcohol, it tastes dry enough, with juicy acidity and green apple flavors. What elevates it above the less expensive bottling is it's length, the minerality and the hints of white flower, Mandarin orange and stone."

Very nice. Paired it with some salmon for a wonderful dinner. More on order.
