Hess Collection Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Cabernet Sauvignon
from Napa Valley, California
winemaker's notes:
Our signature Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon comes from our estate Veeder Hills Vineyard. The elevation of this vineyard ranges from 600-1,120 feet, and its steep slopes and sedimentary clay and shale soils restrict root growth, resulting in Mount
Veeder's hallmark small berries with intense fruit flavors. True to its appellation, this wine possesses dark concentrated fruit flavors and robust tannins.
This wine is complex and alluring with flavors of wild mountain blackberry, black cherry, currant and sweet molasses, accented by underlying flavors of graphite and cedar box. Hints of vanilla and toast are imparted by new French oak barrels. The addition of Mount Veeder Malbec–with its distinguishing characteristics of dark chocolate and boysenberry–adds a heightened intensity to the fruit and lends texture to this wine, while softening and balancing the tannins for a long elegant finish.
Accessible now, this wine will continue to age gracefully though 2018.
Blend:
86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, 1% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot
About the Vineyard
Donald Hess was attracted to Mount Veeder for its elevation and unique mountain climate, which he believed would yield the best grapes to produce great wines. Mount Veeder is distinguished among Napa's mountain districts for having the highest
elevation, coolest growing season and geologically diverse soils. True to the unique mountain terroir, Hess Mount Veeder wines are known for their complexity, structure and elegance. Our mountain estate's 310 acres of vineyards are sustainably
farmed in accordance with Donald's Philosophy; "Nurture the land, return what
you take."
critical acclaim:
"Ripe and forward in the modern cult style, with flavors of blackberry tart, black currants, milk chocolate and ripe mulberry, in addition to sweet, smoky oak. Sturdy mountain tannins provide structural bite, and should help the wine mature beyond 2011."

Had this with tenderloin roast (cooked medium rare), and complimented the meal perfectly. Was bold, rich, smooth and just enough subtleness to not overpower the meal- but strong enough not to get lost. One of our favorites.
Big & Bold
Solid Cab....not overly complex; Medium body; Rich with firm tannins, yet not overly tannic; Black cherry on the nose; Juicy and jammy on the palate with blackberry and dark plum; Ample oak; Interesting finish; Good on its own, but better with food. Would recommend.
