Zinfandel from Sonoma County, California
Aromas of black pepper, spice and mocha perfectly complement the bold fruit essences of black cherry and raspberry. Lush, concentrated flavors of sun-ripened raspberries and chocolate-covered cherries are softened by a touch of creamy oak on the mid-palate. The mouth-filling texture and velvety tannins lead to a long, smooth finish.
Wine & Spirits - "A combination of bright, floral blackberry and darker, black fig flavors form the heart of this zin. Oak scents surround it and grow only more powerful with air. The umami richness suggests juniper-spiced pork might push the oak into the background."
Haywood Estates Los Chamizal Vineyard overlooks the historic town of Sonoma in the southern reaches of the Mayacamas Mountains. Guided by founder Peter Haywood, Los Chamizal Vineyard produced its first crush in 1980, and so began the legacy of robust, elegant Zinfandels.
The soils are shallow - six inches to two feet – giving way to fractured red rock or volcanic tuft soil. The low nutrient levels contribute to the intense character of the wines by limiting growth and restricting leaf production. Cooling wind and fog off the mountain and from nearby San Francisco Bay keep the days temperate and the nights cool. Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the Joneses, or Napa-ites if you will. Grape varieties are more varied here, from Pinot Noir and Zinfandel to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Notable FactsThe largest sub-AVAs of Sonoma include Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Sonoma Valley. Each sub-AVA, with its own micro-climate, is unique in its grape varieties and styles of wine. Dry Creek makes a mean Zinfandel while Russian River produces stand up Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Alexander Valley makes some of the better Cabernet Sauvignons in the county and Sonoma Valley creates excellent wines from all the above varieties. Other grapes found throughout Sonoma include Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah.

Nice fruit firm lingering tannins and very little herbaceous flavor. I would Buy this again. A good Zinfandel.
