Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The primary red fruit aromas of bing cherry and pomegranate are surrounded by orange peel, pipe tobacco, and a woodsy, forest floor quality. As the wine opens with time, notes of rose, cocoa, and baking spice come forward. In the mouth, the entry is supple with a thick velvety texture. The flavors mirror the aromas and, overall, give an impression that is dark and exotic. The mouth-coating tannins present on the long finish leave no doubt that this wine has the longevity to reward patient cellaring. Decanting one to two hours before serving is recommended.

Critical Acclaim

"With Pinot Noir, the magic tric is to have it taste sweet and ripe, and yet to finish bone dry. Few wineries in California acomplish this as regularly as Hanzell, and here they come again, with this wonderful 2008. It's entirely consistent with their past history, being dry, a little tannic and tantalizingly rich in cherry, raspberry and cola fruit. Enjoyable now, with decanting, and should develop in the cellar over the next dozen years if not longer, based on the winery's track record."

The Ambassador's ambition was to create a small vineyard and winery dedicated to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Zellerbachs created the first vintage in 1957 and named...

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...
