Winemaker Notes

#20 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2009

The HALL "Kathryn Hall" Cabernet Sauvignon stands as the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon in our collection. The 2006 vintage was sourced predominately from our Sacrashe Vineyard and captures the deep, dusty essence of this legendary Rutherford hilltop site. We harvested on an early October morning, carrying the prize fruit to our HALL Rutherford winery where it was gravity-fed into our signature fermentation tanks. Native yeast, malolactic fermentations and unfiltered bottling has encouraged a highly nuanced wine with special character and graceful evolution both in the glass and in the cellar.

Dense inky-purple to the core, this wine delivers a stunning nose of effusive, high-toned exotic fruits, truffle, blackberry jam and crushed stone minerality. On the palate, an empyreal richness and densely sweet texture seems to go on forever. Proper cellaring will assure 10-15 years of enjoyment.

Professional Ratings

  • 96
A big, dense, concentrated wine, with wonderful aromas marked by chewy tannins, yet the core currant and blackberry flavors and savory herb and earth nuances provide a solid foundation. Best from 2010 through 2016.
  • 95
Outstanding for its purity, and the incredibly fine tannins, not to mention the compelling flavors. Black and red cherries, currants, cola, mushrooms, cedar, anise and spice flavors mingle into a long, rich finish. So balanced and elegant. Made from 95% Sacrashe Vineyard fruit, in the Rutherford AVA.
  • 90
Medium to full-bodied with a more aggressive structure [than the 2005] as well as a more noticeable astringency to the tannins, but with the necessary depth of fruit and concentration for balance.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
