Hahn Estates Santa Lucia Highlands Estate Syrah 2007
Syrah/Shiraz from California
This deep ruby Syrah combines strength and grace, opening with aromas of raspberry, black cherry and pepper. Lush and seductive, its concentrated fruit flavors are complemented by nuances of dark chocolate, espresso, spice, butter and oak. Sturdy yet refined tannins and a velvety mouthfeel lead to an elegant finish.
This wine pairs perfectly with charred meats and hearty stews. Try it with barbecued spareribs, lamb skewers, or a bacon and blue cheese burger served with sweet potato fries.
Wine Enthusiast - "A dark, rich, ripe Syrah that defines the California style, and preserves the fine structure that this cool-climate region lends to red wines. The wine is dry and tannic, and the flavors, of blackberries, cherries, blueberries, dark chocolate and sweet, smoky oak, are just delicious. Now and for a few years. Editors' Choice."

The spectacular beauty of California's Central Coast is probably the best-known region in all of California for its unique lifestyle. Monterey County's dramatic ocean scenery, historic communities, artistic culture, verdant pine forests, and bountiful agriculture have beckoned adventure-seekers, seafarers, artists, writers and vacationers for over 100 years. And the 99 miles of breathtaking Pacific coastline is something no other California county can boast.
The wind and fog interact with solar radiation to slow grapes' ripening, producing up to two months longer growing season than in warmer grape growing regions. These conditions create fruit with more varietal intensity, flavor, depth and structure, and thus, exceptional wines. In German, "Hahn" means "Rooster" and for this reason a rooster embellishes the Hahn Estates label, honoring the Hahn Family’s European Heritage. With an inspiration to raise Monterey wines to the highest level, the wines of Hahn Estates are created with a philosophy that all great wines are special – akin to the region they were grown in. The Hahn wines celebrate everything that is Monterey – unique in thought, style and setting. View all Hahn Estates Wines
About Other CaliforniaView a map of Other California wineries
California has nearly 100 American Viticulture Areas (AVAs) and accounts for almost 90% of wine production in the United States. In our section of Other California, we include wines from smaller AVAs as well as wines from the California AVA. Here are a few smaller AVAs you may see on the label:
Livermore Valley AVA, located right outside of San Francisco and home to wineries such as Wente.
Lodi County AVA, an AVA further east of San Francisco and known for its excellent, old-vine Zinfandels.
San Francisco Bay AVA, a sprawling AVA that covers Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties, to name a few. Wine that holds only the California AVA is typically a wine that includes grapes from a number of different AVAs, which leads to the general labeling of the wine as California. This does not denote the quality of the wine, only the diversity of where the grapes originate.
About CaliforniaIt's not rare to see a wine's country of origin listed as "California." A country into itself in the wine world, California makes enough varieties and styles to match many European wine countries. It produces a diverse range of wines that span the quality spectrum.
The most famous of the California wine regions is Napa Valley, and these wines are certainly outstanding – but it's not as broad and diverse as its larger neighbor, Sonoma County. Down south, Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley is well-known for its Rhône blends, as well as cool-climate varieties like Pinot and Chardonnay. The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.

This Syrah is dark, rich & ripe. I detected deep black fruit and chocolate on the nose; Cherries, blackberries, plum jam and almost a sweet, smoky oak...delicious on the palate. It's dry and not overly tannic. Has a pretty decent, medium finish. Not anywhere near as good as the Fess Parker Rodney's Vineyard Syrah, but, overall, a decent Syrah.410/2/2012richard hirsch - Denver, CO212/2/2011Yomamabych - Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA34/15/2011Scott N - Lowell, MI45/18/2011Larry Shortt - San Antonio, TX311/19/2010Nice; but not a wine that will be remembered.55/4/2011A classic jammy syrah. Do let it sit. Six people at a dinner liked this and commented on it. It wasn't so rich that it overpowered grilled cod.211/19/2010Was expecting more with a 92 rating, I would rate this 8559/30/2010We ordered a couple of random bottles of wine to be delivered to our hotel. Wine.com delivered on time. When I opened this bottle of wine the aroma was wonderful. The wine is very dark and inky, almost black. It has a lot of fruit at the start. Then some nice peppery spice and fruit on the finish with soft tannins. A very nice surprise I would agree with the 92 rating. Ordered more today.57/26/2010We tried a bottle and ended up ordering another case.
