Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Bright straw-colored yellow with green tones. Smoked and toasted notes on the nose. Mountain flowers and nuts that will quite possibly fuse into a pleasing butter aroma of café au lait caramel, and even a few forest, dried fig and marron glacé tones. The bubbles pack an elegant attack, with pronounced overtones of ripeness, pine nut bread, and pastries, thoroughly covering the palate and bringing back memories of nut shells, rosemary, rye, malt, pralines, dry bread... good feel to the foam, which evokes cream on some parts of the palate.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2005 III Lustros Gran Reserva Brut Nature (disgorged January 2012) is a blend of 70% Xarello and 30% Macabeu from the 5-hectare -La Plana- vineyard that lies 200 meters above sea-level. It spends seven years on the lees and is dosaged with 100-year-old Solera wine. It possesses brilliant clarity on the nose with touches of oyster shell, citrus lemon, wet limestone and yellow flowers. The palate is supremely well-balanced with electrifying acidity on the entry, displaying subtle notes of apricot, lemon curd and quince that lead to a perfectly balanced finish. This is a wonderful Cava that deserves 2-3 hours aeration."

Today, the house is one of the few remaining family-owned estates in the region, with many having...

The most popular red varieties of Spain include Tempranillo and Garnacha (Grenache). Whites don't garner quite as much recognition, but there are some regional varieties not to be missed, like Albarino...

Learn About Vintage

Vintage Champagne and Sparkling Wines Vintage Champagne is made in particularly good years with optimum weather and the best grape selection. Some houses, like Dom Perignon, only make vintage Champagne, so they do not produce a wine every year and have no non-vintage bottlings. What makes vintage Champagne better? Well, status for one - many vintage Champagnes are...
