Glen Carlou Grand Classique 2009
Bordeaux Red Blends from South Africa
This is Glen Carlou's signature red wine. Rich ruby red in color this wine has aromas of red cherry with hints of young black fruits and oak. Flavors of black cured cherries, with layers of dark chocolate and tobacco with spice. The tannins are beautifully proportioned with mild toasted almond.
Blend: 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot, 16% Malbec, 16% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc
The Wine Advocate - "The 2009 Grand Classique is a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot, 16% Malbec, 16% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc aged in new and used barrel for 18 months. It has a lifted bouquet of raspberry and dark plum aromas that needs to develop more complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, kirsch-tinged entry. The acidity is very well entwined with the bright redcurrant and strawberry fruit that leads to a bright, vibrant finish. Perhaps not a long term Grand Classique, but this is well crafted."
Wine Enthusiast - "Notes of cocoa and oak-derived spice add depth to the ripe, dark fruit core of this wine. Black berry, cherry and plum flavors abound on the plush palate, framed by firm tannins and a thick, supple texture. Gripping plum-skin and cigar-box notes linger long on the finish.
International Wine Cellar - "Good full, dark red. Deep, vinous, claret-like aromas of cassis, black cherry, tobacco, mocha, earth and sexy oak. Silky on entry, then firm and bright in the middle, offering intense dark berry and chocolatey oak flavors complicated by a loamy nuance. A bit youthfully clenched but already shows insidious sweetness. Energetic and light on its feet, finishing with a serious tannic backbone. Obviously a very good vintage for this bottling, but this will need time. A lot of wine for the price.

A long history of growing grapes and making wine, but less of a history on exporting it, and even lesser on the quality aspect. At the turn of the century (1900, that is), a surplus of wine in South Africa created a hierarchy of cooperatives, the biggest and best known being KWV. This organization seemed to favor quantity over quality and had most control over wines and vineyards until the late 1980's. Now, with a bit more competition, quality is coming around. Yet, South African wine was not even seen in American wine stores until the mid-1990's – the trade embargo on the country for their racial apartheid laws kept South African wine out of the US. When apartheid fell, so did the embargo, and SA bottles began showing up on US shelves.
White wine has always been the cash crop of South Africa, with much of it distilled to make brandy. More white than red is planted, much of it the Steen variety – known elsewhere in the world as Chenin Blanc. Good producers are making top quality dry wines from this grape. Another grape gaining some raves is Sauvignon Blanc, producing whites that are dry and crisp, yet rounder than many of its Southern Hemisphere counterparts. For reds, the top grapes are Syrah/Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon (& blends) and Pinotage. Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends was once the favorite and most-produced, but Shiraz is taking over as wineries crank out high quality wines from the variety. Pinotage, which used to be a grape only your mother could love, has improved dramatically and is often as delicious as it is distinctive. The most popular regions of the country include Stellenbosch and Paarl.

Glen!!! Big mineral and earth notes. Very different than your typical CA or French Cab. I really like the different presentation of flavors. Lots of character with almost no fruit maybe some really dark cherry or something along those lines.
